TOURIST ATTRACTION IN BAYELSA STATE

Bayelsa state is a state carved out of Rivers State in 1996. It is where the first oil well at Oloibiri was erected. The slogan "Glory of the Land" is befitting as it is the largest crude oil and natural gas producing state in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria.

The major language of the people is English and Ijaw with other dialects.

As a result of water bodies surrounding the state, proper road construction and development are difficult. Nevertheless, the state is still very much tourist attractive.

Listed below are places to visit and what to do in Bayelsa state;

Nigeria's First Oil Well in Oloibiri

Oil exploration began in 1956 in Oloibiri, a small community that changed Nigeria's economy forever. About 50,000 barrels of fuel per day were explored, which soon shot up to approximately 2,000,000. This community has been somewhat abandoned after oil exploration ceased in 1978. This historical site is worth seeing.

Okpoama-Brass Beach

It is the longest beach in Bayelsa state, where you can swim, eat, and have a great time. During the festive season, especially Christmas, there are even more fun things to do.

Kontiki Amusement Park and Resort, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State

It has facilities for adults and kids alike, which makes it a perfect destination for group and personal picnics and hangouts.

Akassa Lighthouse

The Akassa Lighthouse was built in 1910. It is located close to the seaside in Akassa and is about 60 meters tall, making it one of the tallest lighthouses in West Africa.

Its original purpose was to guard distant ships to dock at the inland port, and it served as a delight to distant navigators as they approached shallow waters at the town of Akassa.

Akassa Slave Transit Camp and Tunnel

Akassa Slave Transit Camp and Tunnel was a slave camp during the slave trade era.

The houses were built with solid iron and bricks, and the chains used to bind slaves as they awaited shipment are still visible at the camp, and the tunnel through which slaves were stoked away can still be seen at the tourist destination today.

Tourists visit the slave camp today and revisit the days our people were taken away to foreign nations.

The Mungo Park Residence

It was formerly the divisional headquarters of the colonial rulers of the Brass division and was named after the explorer Mungo Park who discovered the River's source.

The historic structure has been restored and kept as a tourist attraction. The wood and brick structure is still sturdy after decades of storms.

There are many history and memory lanes to walk down in Bayelsa state.

Other sites include Ox bow lake, Peace Park, Mangrove Creeks, The Isaac Adaka Boro Monument, The Marble Monument of late Chief Christopher Iwowari, Statue of late King Ockiya Mausoleum.

Bayelsa state is not only tourist-friendly, but it is also a good state for Corp members to serve their Father's land.
